On Tuesday, a conference was held in Algiers themed “Scouting: A Space for Instilling Values of Patriotism and Citizenship” to commemorate the National Day of the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA). Participants highlighted the crucial need to instill values of citizenship in younger generations to preserve the nation’s memory.
Hassan Maghdouri, the Director General of the National Museum of the Mujahid, emphasized the significant role of the scout movement in embedding deep-rooted values, particularly national consciousness and patriotism, during Algeria’s colonial period. He noted that at a time when the Algerian people lacked any organizational framework, scouting provided an educational and cultural alternative, ultimately laying the groundwork for the revolution that began on November 1, 1954.
Maghdouri commended the current generation of youth for exemplifying "patriotism, discipline, and mutual support." He asserted that such anniversaries serve as vital moments to rekindle and convey these values to younger citizens, fostering a spirit of patriotism among them.
Mustapha Saâdoune, the General Commander of the former SMA, echoed this sentiment. He stressed the importance of celebrating such anniversaries to reinforce the fundamental principles of scouting within younger generations. He mentioned that this “old school” continues to follow in the footsteps of its founder while offering insights into the life of martyr Mustapha Ferroukhi, who played a key role in establishing the SMA alongside fellow hero and martyr Mohamed Bouras. The event featured a documentary film showcasing Ferroukhi’s militant and diplomatic journey.
The conference, organized by the National Museum of the Mujahid in collaboration with the SMA Alumni Association, was timed to mark the 84th anniversary of the martyrdom of movement founder Mohamed Bouras on May 27, 1941, and to pay tribute to one of its notable figures, martyr Mustapha Ferroukhi (1922-1960).
Through such events, Algerians not only celebrate their past and honor the legacy of their martyrs but also strive to cultivate a renewed sense of national pride and identity among the youth, ensuring that the spirit of patriotism and citizenship prevails in the fabric of society.
