Rationalization of Imports Enhances Local Trust: Insights from the Minister of Commerce

During a recent visit to Tiaret, Interior Commerce Minister Tayeb Zitouni highlighted the positive impact of the government’s import rationalization policy on citizens’ confidence in national products. He emphasized that this initiative, championed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has not only fostered trust in local offerings but also resulted in increased investments across various sectors.

Zitouni reported that investments facilitated through partnerships—both local and international—have led to significant financial benefits. Notably, this policy has saved Algeria over $700 million that would have otherwise been allocated for imports. Additionally, the country has successfully exported surplus national products valued at $49 million, a testament to the growing demand for domestic products in international markets.

While the focus remains on strengthening local production, Zitouni acknowledged that certain products still necessitate imports, suggesting a balanced approach to both local cultivation and global trade.

Development of Regional Wholesale Markets

At the site of a new regional wholesale market being developed by the "Magros" company, the Minister emphasized its critical role in regulating pricing and organizing the distribution of essential food items like fruits and vegetables. The establishment of this facility aims to minimize the number of intermediaries involved in food distribution by prompting direct contracts with local farmers, ensuring fair pricing for consumers.

Zitouni underscored the expectation that the Tiaret center will become a benchmark for the other nine markets managed by "Magros" nationwide, which currently operate through intermediary contracts. He insisted on the prompt completion of this vital structure to ensure its operational success.

The center, located on the southern outskirts of Tiaret, occupies a generous 9-hectare area and includes five spacious warehouses for merchandise display, cold storage facilities with a 4,000 m³ capacity, and essential services for users from neighboring regions such as Tissemsilt and Laghouat.

Expansion of Refrigeration Facilities

Additionally, the Minister visited the "FRIGOMEDIT" refrigeration complex situated in the Zâaroura industrial zone. Soon to be operational, this facility boasts a capacity of 15 million m³ for storage, further enhancing the region’s food supply chain. Zitouni directed the formulation of a rental agreement between the managing company and "Magros," facilitating direct handling of products from their origin.

Inauguration of Additional Facilities

The Minister’s tour included inaugurating several critical infrastructures, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing local commerce. Noteworthy mentions were the quality control laboratory in Tiaret, a grain storage center in Sougueur, and the opening of a covered market in Ksar Chellala. These initiatives aim to bolster local agriculture and improve food security.

Zitouni’s visit concluded with a working session involving local investors, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in fostering economic growth and ensuring the sustainability of local industries.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Commerce’s initiatives in Tiaret reflect a broader commitment to enhancing Algeria’s economic landscape through import rationalization, the establishment of strategic market infrastructures, and a focus on local production. This multifaceted approach not only aims to boost consumer trust in national products but also strives to create a robust environment for investment, ultimately driving the nation’s economic growth.
