Summary of Recent Economic Relations Meeting between Mauritania and Algeria

On Friday, in Nouakchott, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of Mauritania met with the Algerian Minister of Internal Commerce and Market Regulation, Tayeb Zitouni. Their discussion focused on strengthening economic ties between the two nations, highlighting a mutual commitment to enhancing collaboration.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace and included various notable attendees, such as Mauritania’s Minister of Commerce and Tourism, Zeinebou Ahmednah; Rabah Fassih, Director of Economic Exchange Promotion at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Algeria’s ambassador to Mauritania, Amine Sid.

Minister Zitouni emphasized the significance of advancing Algerian-Mauritanian economic relations, citing recent meetings between business operators from both countries as evidence of their genuine intention to foster closer ties. Following discussions, President El Ghazouani proposed several recommendations aimed at elevating economic collaboration to the level of established political relations.

Zitouni highlighted the necessity of overcoming obstacles that hinder the growth of economic engagement and stressed the importance of better coordination between the commerce ministries of both nations. This includes cooperation on consumer protection, trade registration, and the establishment of effective economic partnerships.

This meeting coincided with the seventh edition of the Algerian Products Fair in Nouakchott, running from May 22 to May 28, which features nearly 200 Algerian companies. Earlier in the day, an Algerian-Mauritanian Economic Forum was also held as part of the fair, establishing a platform for business discussions and networking.


The meeting between President El Ghazouani and Minister Zitouni signifies a proactive step in enhancing the economic landscape between Algeria and Mauritania. By identifying key areas for collaboration and addressing existing challenges, both leaders aim to maximize the potential of their economic partnership. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the role that cooperative economic relationships play in regional stability and development.
