Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the May 8, 1945 Massacres in Algeria

The Algerian Ministry of Mujahideen and Victims of Terrorism has established a comprehensive program to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the May 8, 1945 massacres, as well as to celebrate the National Memory Day, a designation granted by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This initiative honors the sacrifices of the brave martyrs during a pivotal moment in Algeria’s history.

National Celebration Under Presidential Patronage

The commemoration, endorsed by the President, will take place across the nation, featuring a variety of activities including historical events, cultural presentations, sports activities, scientific conferences, and colloquia. Involvement will come from various sectors, including youth and civil society actors. This broad participation underpins the significance of the event in recognizing the contributions of numerous historical figures and revolutionaries who dedicated themselves to Algeria’s fight for independence.

Honoring Historical Contributions

Specific emphasis will be placed on honoring revolutionaries and notable Algerian figures who have significantly impacted the country’s history, whether through armed struggle or national, political, and cultural endeavors. Recognitions will extend to both living and deceased historians and Mujahideen, celebrating their roles in shaping Algeria’s legacy.

Film and Digital Initiatives

A documentary film showcasing efforts to preserve national memory will be unveiled, accompanied by "Days of Memory Cinema," coordinated with the Ministry of Culture and Arts. In line with the preparations, an interactive digital platform will be launched, acting as a virtual museum that promotes Algeria’s material and immaterial heritage from 1830 to 1962. This platform also includes the initiation of an educational video game about Algerian history aimed at engaging younger generations.

National Forums for Historical Discourse

The event will also feature national assemblies addressing issues related to national history and memory, aimed at fostering a unified historical discourse and strengthening collective memory. Prominent Algerian experts will oversee these assemblies, which will be held periodically as part of a national strategy for memory preservation.

Focus on Colonial Crimes

In coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, national colloquia will examine the crimes committed during the French colonial period, particularly in the wilayas of Sétif and Guelma. Additionally, historical activities will be conducted in collaboration with various Mujahid museums across the country.

Journey of Memory for Descendants of Deportees

As part of memory preservation efforts, the Ministry will organize a "Journey of Memory" for descendants of Algerians deported to New Caledonia and French Guiana during the colonial period. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the ancestral sacrifices that have contributed to Algeria’s identity.

Publishing Notable Historical Works

In recognition of the critical contributions of many historians to Algeria’s national narrative, efforts will be made to publish and republish the works of notable Algerian historians alongside those of foreign historians who have addressed Algeria’s history fairly.

Public Reenactments of Events

Reenactments of the May 8, 1945 massacres are planned to take place in public spaces nationwide. This initiative will be conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, Local Communities, and Regional Planning, as well as youth councils and civil society observatories. These reenactments will serve as poignant reminders of the past.

Friday Sermon to Honor the Martyrs

To further encourage public consciousness about the sacrifices made during this tumultuous time, the Friday sermon on May 9 will focus on the May 8, 1945 massacres, aiming to deepen understanding among citizens regarding the historical significance of these events.

Contextual Significance

Minister for Mujahideen and Victims of Terrorism, Laïd Rebiga, emphasized that this year’s commemoration holds particular national and international relevance. He noted that the date represents a critical turning point in Algeria’s history, marking the moment when the Algerian people chose their path towards freedom and independence. The 80th anniversary thus serves not just as a remembrance of past sufferings, but as a reaffirmation of national identity and commitment to future generations.

This multifaceted commemorative program reflects Algeria’s dedication to preserving and celebrating its historical legacy, ensuring that the sacrifices of the martyrs are never forgotten. Through a combination of public engagement, educational initiatives, and cultural activities, Algeria continues to honor the profound struggles faced in its journey towards independence.
