Summary of Mohamed Meziane’s Speech on Digital Transformation in Algerian Media

On Wednesday, during an interview with the national daily "Horizons," Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, emphasized the critical need for digital transformation in the media sector, proposing that it serves as a vital tool for national development. He asserted that embracing digital technology is imperative for enhancing the quality of media services and bolstering their online presence.

Meziane highlighted the strategic initiatives put forth by the ministry, aligning with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at modernizing and developing the digital infrastructure within media establishments. A key component of this strategy is the establishment of a satellite broadcasting plan aimed at expanding Algeria’s capacity to disseminate its media content internationally. This initiative aims not only to enrich Algeria’s global media footprint but also to enhance its digital presence through existing digital platforms.

In addition to strengthening traditional media channels, Meziane mentioned the ministry’s commitment to fostering the creation and growth of digital and online media. This effort includes launching online portals to make various administrative services more accessible to citizens, delivering critical information through official websites, and ensuring effective communication between the government and the public.

Further addressing the practical outcomes of digitalization in the media landscape, Meziane reported noteworthy achievements by the National Center for Press Documentation, Image, and Information. To date, the center has successfully digitized 3.5 million photographs, achieving complete digitization of this collection, alongside 6,500 written heritage books, which represents 85% of its total. Additionally, 20% of historical newspaper archives and 8,500 hours of audiovisual heritage have also been digitized and preserved.

Meziane’s remarks underscore a significant shift in the Algerian media landscape, advocating for modernization and digital integration as tools for enhancing communication and supporting national progress. His vision lays the groundwork for an informed populace, equipped with better access to media and government resources, thus contributing to an empowered and engaged citizenry in the digital age.

Overall, the minister’s declarations reflect a broader commitment to harnessing technology for developmental goals, ultimately aiming for a more dynamic and responsive media environment within Algeria.
