Summary of "Palestine Trahie" Theater Performance

The theater production "Palestine Trahie," which explores the struggle and resilience of the Palestinian people, was presented in a contemporary style in Algiers. Adapted from the works of Algerian writer Kateb Yacine, the performance took place at the National Theater Mahieddine-Bachtarzi and was produced by the Regional Theater of Tizi-Ouzou in 2025.

Directed by Ahmed Rezzag, the play merges "Palestine Trahie" with Yacine’s "Cadavre Encerclé," through a dramatic reinterpretation by Lamine Bahri. Over the course of 65 minutes, the production critiques the "culpable silence" and complicity of some individuals regarding the actions of the Zionist occupiers against the Palestinian people. The narrative centers around Mohamed Zeitoun, a young Palestinian forced to abandon his homeland, facing a landscape filled with conspirators.

The cast, featuring around twenty actors from the Tizi-Ouzou theater, delivered a commendable performance that captivated the audience. Notable performances included Malek Fellag as "Moh Zeitoun," alongside Belkacem Latari and Ouiza Nedjimi, whose thorough embodiment of their roles brought the dense text to life with aesthetic nuance and polished acting.

Rezzag’s set design emphasized mobility, utilizing a simple yet functional décor that allowed for quick transitions between scenes, reflecting the varied locations and situations present in the original text. The dynamic set was complemented by a soundtrack composed by Ismail Khaldi, resonating with the tragic themes of the story and integrating seamlessly into the choreography, which was created by Guemiri Khadidja. The choreography emphasized the Palestinian people’s determination and resilience.

In a post-performance discussion, Rezzag acknowledged the challenges of adapting Yacine’s work, highlighting the complexities involved as the text underwent numerous revisions in response to the political climate of its time.

Overall, "Palestine Trahie" is a significant artistic endeavor that not only serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the Palestinian people but also showcases the rich tradition of theater as a medium for political expression and cultural resilience.
