On Sunday, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Algiers between Algeria’s Sonarem Group and Malaysia’s Lion Group. This agreement aims to enhance collaboration in mining exploration, exploitation, and the steel industry, as reported by the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.

Key Details of the Event

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Energy, under the watch of key figures including Karima Tafer, the Secretary of State for Mines, Belkacemi Soltani, the CEO of Sonarem, and ministry officials. This MoU aligns with Sonarem’s strategic objectives to forge partnerships with leading companies in the mining sector.

Scope of Collaboration

As part of the agreement, both parties will explore cooperative opportunities in various mining areas, including gold, copper, and manganese, alongside promoting joint investments. The collaboration will also focus on sharing expertise and training skilled labor. Additionally, the MoU mentions potential developments in future mining sites and the processing of mineral resources.

Both groups agreed to prioritize specific projects and set up technical, financial, and legal frameworks to guide their cooperation.

Previous Engagements

A delegation from the Lion Group had earlier engaged with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on December 18, 2024, and with the Minister of State for Energy on July 11, 2024. Following these discussions, further meetings with Sonarem’s CEO were held on April 22, 2025, to assess future cooperative prospects.
