Air Algérie recently signed an agreement in Algiers with the aircraft manufacturer ATR for the acquisition of 16 new planes, designated for its domestic airline division. The contract was formalized by Rabah Midou from Air Algérie and ATR’s Vice President and Commercial Director, Alexis Vidal, in the presence of Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud and Air Algérie’s General Director, Hamza Benhamouda.

The signing ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, Major General Abdelhafidh Bakhouche, Director General of Customs, and notable figures from various sectors, including labor unions and economic organizations. The Italian ambassador to Algeria, Alberto Cutillo, was also present.

During the event, Minister Sayoud praised this initiative as part of broader efforts to “transform air transport” in Algeria, with the new aircraft expected to arrive in 2026. Benhamouda emphasized that this move is part of an ambitious investment plan aimed at strengthening the fleet of the new Domestic Airlines subsidiary and facilitating the effective expansion of its flight network.

Vidal expressed that this deal positions Algeria among the key operators of ATR aircraft globally, noting that Air Algérie has become ATR’s most significant partner in Africa. He mentioned that significant upgrades will be made to the new airplanes, improving their engines, controls, and passenger comfort.

In summary, the acquisition of these 16 ATR aircraft marks a significant step in Air Algérie’s strategy to enhance its domestic airline operations and expand its reach, with an eye toward modern technology and improved services for passengers. The anticipated arrival of these planes in 2026 underscores the company’s commitment to modernization and growth within the aviation sector of Algeria.
