Summary of the Integrated Powdered Milk Production Project in Algeria
On Thursday, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, co-chaired a significant event with Kamel Rezig, advisor to the President of Algeria responsible for commerce, supply, regulation, and import-export matters. This event marked the signing of the final convention for a major agricultural initiative, the integrated powdered milk production project in the southern region of Algeria, valued at an impressive $3.5 billion.
The formal agreement was penned by Souad Assaous, the Director General of Agricultural Investment and Land at the Ministry, and Ali Al-Ali, the President of the Board of Directors of Baladna-Algeria. The signing ceremony was attended by various ministry officials and the Director General of the National Investment Fund, emphasizing the project’s significance for the country.
In addition to the primary agreement related to the project, another important convention was signed between Baladna-Algeria and the National Interprofessional Office of Milk and Dairy Products (ONIL). This agreement was finalized by both the President of Baladna-Algeria and ONIL’s Director General, underlining the collaboration between private and public sectors for national wellbeing.
This ambitious project will be implemented across an area of 117,000 hectares and involves constructing farms for forage production, cattle breeding, and the production of both milk and meat, along with a dedicated facility for powdered milk manufacturing. The project’s overarching goal is to ensure local production of 50% of Algeria’s powdered milk needs, facilitating the country’s pursuit of self-sufficiency. Additionally, it aims to enrich the local market with red meat, create job opportunities, and increase the number of cattle heads in the region.
Progress on the project has already initiated in Adrar province, with the completion of exploratory drilling and thorough studies regarding land development. This reflects the government’s commitment to bolster the agricultural sector and enhance food security within Algeria.
The integrated approach to this project showcases a strategic vision from the Algerian government, as it seeks to mitigate dependency on imports while simultaneously elevating the agricultural landscape of the southern territories. By expanding local production capabilities, the initiative not only aims to foster economic growth but also addresses food accessibility for the populace, ensuring sustainable development in agricultural practices.
This monumental effort represents a step towards transforming Algeria’s agricultural sector, positioning it for greater resilience against global market fluctuations and enhancing the overall agricultural productivity of the country. As the plans unfold, the focus remains steadfast on leveraging local resources and talent to build a strong foundation for future agricultural initiatives.
