Hyacinthe Bicamumpaka, a journalist for Radio Rwanda during the 1994 Tutsi genocide, has been indicted in France for genocide, complicity in crimes against humanity, and conspiracy to commit these crimes. His detention was confirmed on May 9. Bicamumpaka was described as an influential journalist closely linked to the main planners of the genocide. He fled Rwanda amid the genocide, seeking asylum in France, claiming persecution. However, his past roles on Radio Rwanda, a government propaganda tool during the genocide, led to his asylum request being rejected. The genocide resulted in approximately 800,000 deaths, primarily among Tutsis.
