Summary of the Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank in Algiers
The annual meetings of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) continued in Algiers, taking place at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center. The event was held under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and attracted nearly 2,000 participants, including economists, business leaders, and representatives from the bank’s 57 member countries.
Day Four Agenda
The closing day was packed with a variety of conferences, panels, and closed-door meetings, including sessions from the Al-Aqsa Supreme Council and its Administrative Committee. Notable discussions included a roundtable during the Private Sector Forum and a conference themed “Economic Diversification as a Lever for Structural Transformation.” There were also multiple agreements set to be signed regarding financing contracts for various projects.
Significantly, the previous day highlighted important milestones, including the signing of financing agreements worth over one billion dollars earmarked for infrastructure, agriculture, health, and climate change initiatives.
Key Outcomes and Collaborations
One major development was the cooperation agreement between the Algerian Export Credit Insurance Company (CAGEX) and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC) under the IDB umbrella. This agreement allows for ICIEC to provide reinsurance services to CAGEX.
Participants emphasized the importance of engaging all stakeholders, especially the private sector, to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing countries. The challenges were identified as moving beyond financial mobilization to the coordination and harmonization of strategies among governments, financial institutions, and economic players.
Innovation and Startups Competition
The third day also hosted the third edition of the IDB’s innovation and startups competition, where nine Algerian startups were awarded. Notably, MyTPE won the first prize in the "Financial Solutions and Cybersecurity" category, followed by SlickPay and Diar Dzair.
In summary, the annual meetings have been a significant platform for discussing major financial agreements, collaboration initiatives, and the importance of innovation in achieving economic diversification and growth among the member nations of the IDB. The collaboration and dialogue among the diverse participants underline the collective efforts needed to address economic challenges and harness opportunities in the region.
