Summary of the 9th Mohamed Dib Literary Award Ceremony

The ninth edition of the "Mohamed Dib" Literary Prize, alongside the inaugural "Dib Amal" Prize for short stories aimed at young adults, took place on Saturday night at the Palais de la Culture "Abdelkrim Dali" in Tlemcen. This event highlighted the growing recognition of literary talent in Algeria and aimed to inspire emerging writers.

Award Winners

The prestigious "Mohamed Dib" Prize was awarded to three notable works:

  1. "Sirat mawta lam yabkihim ahad" (Biographies of the Dead Whom No One Mourns) by Abdelkader Barghouth (Arabic).
  2. "Murdus" by Ould Ammar Tahar (Amazigh).
  3. "Taxi" by Aymen Liham (French).

In the newly established "Dib Amal" category, which encourages creativity among youth aged 18 to 30, the prize went to Sirine Bessaïd for her French short story titled "Le rouge du café."

These four works were chosen from a competitive pool of over 130 submissions and evaluated by a jury of 23 members, including writers, literary critics, and university professors.

Significance of the Awards

Amine Boudefla, the local director of culture and arts, emphasized that the "Mohamed Dib" Prize is now officially recognized within activities supported by the Ministry of Culture. He highlighted the importance of the "Dib Amal" Prize in encouraging young writers to explore short fiction. Boudefla noted that these awards are instrumental in celebrating the legacy of Mohamed Dib, a prominent Algerian author known for his critique of French colonial practices and his efforts to preserve Algeria’s national memory.

Ceremony Highlights

The award ceremony also included the distribution of certificates and symbolic prizes to all participants. Additionally, attendees enjoyed a theatrical presentation focused on translation, performed by young members of the "Dar El Kobra" theater workshop. The evening concluded with performances of Andalusian music by the "Es Salam" orchestra from Tlemcen.

Looking ahead, Sabah Benmansour, the president of the organizing association, announced an upcoming study day on translation scheduled for the following Sunday at the Palais de la Culture "Abdelkrim Dali."

The event not only celebrates literary achievements but also fosters creativity and cultural engagement among the youth of Tlemcen and beyond.
