réception de nouveaux avions à partir de septembre prochain
Air Algérie’s Fleet Expansion and Sustainability Goals
Introduction
Hamza Benhamouda, the CEO of Air Algérie, announced on Saturday that the airline will start receiving new aircraft beginning September 2023. This acquisition stems from a commitment to expand its fleet by 15 planes, despite delays due to challenges faced by the aircraft manufacturing company.
Fleet Expansion Plans
During a conference focused on sustainability in civil aviation, Benhamouda explained that the original timeline for receiving these aircraft was set for June 2023. The postponement, however, was attributed to the global airline industry’s struggles following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected both manufacturers and suppliers of interior equipment.
In May 2023, Air Algérie signed contracts with Boeing and Airbus for the construction of these 15 new planes, as part of a broader initiative launched by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This program aims to strengthen Air Algérie’s fleet and enhance its international network, positioning Algiers as a regional air transport hub.
The first deliveries, initially expected by the end of the second quarter of 2025, have also been delayed due to technical issues. The addition of these aircraft will enable new flight routes to African, Asian, and European destinations, with plans for two new services: one to Amsterdam and another to Guangzhou in China, anticipating commencement before the year concludes.
Sustainability Initiatives
Benhamouda emphasized Air Algérie’s commitment to sustainability and energy transition within the aviation sector. The airline plans to introduce sustainable fuel at select foreign airports, with hopes to implement similar measures domestically once local production capabilities are established.
Air Algérie aims to be a leader in the energy transition in Africa and the Mediterranean, guided by a comprehensive strategy assessing its carbon footprint across all operations. This strategy focuses on five key areas: modernization of air operations, energy efficiency, innovation and digitalization, integration of sustainable fuels, and waste management in alignment with circular economy principles.
Domestic Air Transport Developments
In addition to its fleet expansion, Air Algérie is working on establishing a subsidiary dedicated to domestic air transport. Benhamouda reassured stakeholders that a roadmap has been drawn up and will be shared shortly. This initiative is intended to boost domestic air travel, reflecting a growth of over 25% in passenger numbers for domestic flights between 2019 and 2024.
Impact of Regional Instability
Addressing recent security developments in the Middle East, Benhamouda confirmed the suspension of flights to Amman, Jordan, but assured that service would resume once the situation stabilizes. Other regional routes remain unaffected.
Commitment to Environmental Standards
Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Nadjiba Djilali, commended Air Algérie for its environmental commitments, noting that it is among the first African airlines to adopt the CORSIA carbon reduction protocol. Meanwhile, Hassan Boulfelfel, Director General of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), called for immediate investment in sustainable fuel production and modernization of the national fleet to meet high environmental standards.
Conference on Aviation Sustainability
The international conference themed "Sustainability in Minds for a Green Aviation" featured prominent figures, including ministers and aviation experts, discussing innovative solutions and practical approaches to embed sustainability within the sector and tackle environmental challenges.
Conclusion
Air Algérie’s strategic initiatives—including fleet expansion and sustainability measures—reflect a broader vision for modernizing aviation in Algeria. With the government’s backing and a clear roadmap for domestic air transport, the company is poised to align with international standards and foster a sustainable aviation future. The ongoing discussions and enhancements underscore the importance of adapting to both market demands and environmental imperatives within the aviation industry.
