Documentary Launch in Oran: "Jerah la tandamil" – A Tribute to Algerian Heroes

On Thursday, in Oran, the Algerian Minister of Moudjahidine and the Rights Holders, Laïd Rebiga, oversaw the launch of the historical documentary titled "Jerah la tandamil" (Des blessures qui ne guérissent pas). This project, produced by the Algerian Public Television Establishment’s Oran station, is directed by Zoubir Mahboub.

The filming commenced at the headquarters of the National Association of Grande Invalids of the War of National Liberation, coinciding with a national symposium marking the National Memory Day, which commemorates the May 8, 1945 massacres. The documentary aims to chronicle the firsthand accounts from Moudjahidine (freedom fighters) and veterans of the National Liberation War, who stood against the brutal French colonial regime along the Challe and Morice Lines. According to director Zoubir Mahboub, the film will comprise 15 episodes, each running approximately 13 minutes, focusing on preserving historical memory through the narratives of its heroes.

This endeavor is part of a larger commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution. It reflects a collaborative effort between the Algerian Public Television Establishment, the Ministry of Moudjahidine and Rights Holders, and the National Association of Grande Invalids.

In his statements during the launch event, Rebiga highlighted his ministry’s commitment to collecting living testimonies. He considers these accounts crucial national heritage and a vital resource for historical writing and preservation. Currently, the ministry oversees the collection of over 45,000 living testimonies—totaling approximately 33,000 hours of recorded material, with around 14,000 hours already digitized. This wealth of information will be integrated into a centralized national database (Data Center) and utilized in a digital archive management application, ensuring accessibility for future generations through a specialized platform for students, researchers, and historians.

Additionally, Rebiga announced the upcoming launch of the Geo-Heritage platform, which will catalog nearly 10,000 historical sites across the country. This initiative is an effort to further enhance the preservation of Algeria’s rich historical landscape.

Aside from the documentary launch, Minister Rebiga visited Moudjahid Abid Mustapha at his residence and also paid respects to the family of the late Moudjahid and former Secretary of Wilaya of the National Moudjahidine Organization in Oran, Soumeur Abdelkader. This visit underscores the minister’s dedication to honoring those who significantly contributed to Algeria’s fight for independence.

In summary, the documentary "Jerah la tandamil" serves as a significant tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Algeria’s freedom fighters, ensuring their stories and the nation’s history are preserved for future generations. The government’s efforts in digitization and the establishment of platforms for historical records will facilitate research and education on Algeria’s rich past, strengthening national identity and memory.
