Summary of Meeting on Algeria-Canada Cooperation in Energy and Mining

On Tuesday, Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, held discussions with Canadian Ambassador to Algeria, Ms. Robin Lynn Wettlaufer, in Algiers. The meeting, attended by the Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, Mr. Noureddine Yassaâ, as well as ministry officials, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors.

Both parties explored investment opportunities to strengthen partnerships between Algerian and Canadian companies. In renewable energy, they discussed potential joint projects in wind energy, energy storage, innovative technical solutions, green hydrogen, training, technology transfer, and skill development. Mr. Arkab highlighted Algeria’s ongoing reforms, including new investment laws and regulations regarding hydrocarbons and mining, which aim to attract foreign investment and facilitate easier access to the national market.

The Minister urged Canadian companies to seize investment opportunities in Algeria, specifically in hydrocarbon exploration, production, transformation, energy industry, seawater desalination, and local manufacturing of relevant equipment. He also expressed Algeria’s desire to leverage Canadian expertise in mining, particularly in geological studies, mapping, and the exploitation of strategic and critical minerals, given Canada’s strong reputation in this sector globally.

Ambassador Wettlaufer expressed satisfaction with the current state of Algerian-Canadian relations and emphasized Canadian companies’ interest in expanding their presence in Algeria, particularly in key sectors. She highlighted the importance of Algerian participation in planned economic and investment forums in Canada this year, which would allow for knowledge exchange and cooperation in energy and mining.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties acknowledged the "promising prospects" for strengthening economic partnerships between Algeria and Canada and agreed to continue coordination and joint actions to realize projects beneficial to both nations.

This marks another step towards a deeper collaboration that aims to create an economic landscape conducive to mutual growth in energy and mining sectors.
