The film chronicles the life and struggle of Zighoud Youcef (1921-1956), an emblematic figure of the Algerian War of Independence. The screening was attended by notable figures, including the President of the National People’s Assembly, Brahim Boughali, various presidential advisers, and members of the government, among them the Minister of Mujahideen and the Minister of Culture and Arts.

Spanning two and a half hours, the film portrays Zighoud Youcef’s journey from joining the Algerian People’s Party (PPA) to actively participating in the liberation movement against French colonial rule. It highlights key events in his life, such as his significant role in the historic Meeting of the 22 and his leadership alongside Didouche Mourad in igniting the Revolution in Northern Constantine. The film also depicts the offensive in Northern Constantine that took place on August 20, 1955, and culminates in the martyrdom of Zighoud Youcef on September 23, 1956, in Sidi Mezghiche, Skikda.

« Zighoud Youcef » not only reconstructs the armed struggle in eastern Algeria but also showcases the heroism of his comrades, including Lakhdar Bentobbal, Ali Kafi, Amar Benaouda, and Didouche Mourad. It provides glimpses into the martyr’s family life, beginning from his birth in the village of Smendou, adding a personal dimension to his remarkable story. The film’s score was composed by Safy Boutella, and it features performances from a talented cast, particularly Ali Namous, who portrays the titular character.

In an interview, director Mounès Khammar mentioned that the production took two years, with filming locations set in Constantine, Skikda, and Mila. The film had its premiere in February, coinciding with the National Martyr’s Day, following directives from the Ministry of Mujahideen and the Victims’ Rights.

He highlighted the government’s initiative to preserve national memory and honor the sacrifices of the martyrs, aligning with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision. Rebiga noted that the ministry plans to continue producing historical films about the Algerian Revolution, aiming to promote these films both regionally and internationally to highlight the revolution’s values and symbols.

On referencing the upcoming film about Emir Abdelkader, Rebiga affirmed President Tebboune’s commitment to ensuring that the production meets international standards, reflecting the significance of this prominent historical figure. He expressed support for the production efforts and the dedication to fully mobilizing resources to illustrate various aspects of the Emir’s multifaceted legacy, including his humanitarianism, leadership, and spirituality.
