Algeria Gears Up for the 24th Arab Athletics Championships

Almost 90 Algerian athletes are set to compete in the 24th edition of the Arab Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from April 30 to May 4 at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium in Oran. Yacine Louail, the president of the Algerian Athletics Federation (FAA), made this announcement during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee in Ben Aknoun, Algiers.

Louail emphasized the federation’s goal of maximizing participation from senior athletes, including those under the age of 23 (U23). He expressed confidence in the potential of certain athletes to secure gold medals across various disciplines, declaring that the FAA has high expectations for performance during the event.

As of the latest updates, nine Arab countries have confirmed their participation in the championships. The FAA is anticipating the involvement of approximately 450 athletes from 22 Arab nations, including Algeria. Louail praised the support from the Ministry of Sports, the Algerian Olympic Committee, and local authorities in Oran, noting the city’s preparedness to host the event, thanks to its adequate infrastructure such as accommodation facilities and the Mediterranean Village.

The Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium features a track certified by World Athletics, equipped with modern facilities and lighting that make it suitable for hosting significant sporting events, Louail noted.

In addition to the Arab Championships, Oran is set to host other significant athletics events in the coming years, including the meeting of the African Athletics Confederation (CAA) Council on July 11, 2025, the CAA Congress on July 12-13, 2025, and the 3rd African U18 and U20 Championships scheduled for July 14-18, 2025. Moreover, an international athletics meeting in Oran will occur on June 28, 2024, featuring both African and international athletes.

The international meeting is slated for the evening of June 28, from 5 PM to 9 PM. The FAA president hopes for a strong turnout of top-class athletes for this event.

Currently, Algerian athletes are training in Algiers and Bejaia and will embark on an overseas training camp from April 5 to April 22. Louail outlined that they have set clear medium and long-term objectives to achieve the best possible performance, with a goal of at least securing a podium finish at the Arab Championship.

Despite the stiff competition from athletes from Gulf countries, Louail maintains optimism regarding the capabilities of Algerian athletes, encouraged by their technical skills and training.

In summary, Algeria is preparing to host a significant event in athletics, underlining the nation’s commitment to fostering and promoting sports excellence. The upcoming Arab Championships, along with future events, position Algeria as an active player in the regional athletics scene, showcasing its facilities and nurturing a new generation of athletes.
