Summary of Local Delivery of Fiat Vehicles for Taxi Drivers in Algeria
On Tuesday, a significant milestone was reached in Algeria with the delivery of the first batch of locally manufactured "Fiat" vehicles intended for taxi drivers. This delivery aligns with a contract established between the National Union of Taxi Drivers and Transporters (SNTT) and Stellantis Algeria, which commits to supplying 50 vehicles per month.
The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Saïd Sayoud, along with officials from Stellantis Algeria and SNTT-UGTA. During the event, Sayoud emphasized the initiative’s importance in modernizing the national taxi fleet and addressing the challenges faced by drivers due to aging vehicles. The minister highlighted that improving public transport quality is a priority for the government.
The initial batch consists of 50 "Doblo" vehicles specifically tailored to enhance taxi services at airports, bus terminals, and ports. Taxi drivers interested in acquiring these vehicles must reach out to their respective union sections. Furthermore, a new agreement with the Local Development Bank (BDL) is in the works, aimed at providing financial support to taxi drivers through Islamic financing methods.
Mr. Sayoud also mentioned broader efforts aimed at elevating the performance of various transportation sectors. He announced the reactivation of 11 "Coradia" trains, which had been out of service, ahead of the upcoming Aïd Al-Adha holiday. A special transportation program is being prepared to accommodate the surge in demand during this period.
In addition, Sayoud reiterated plans to establish a domestic airline under Air Algérie as part of a national transport enhancement strategy, a project endorsed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. On the bus front, the fleet will be bolstered with 104 new buses currently in production at military manufacturing facilities, and there are prospects for additional buses from other production units.
Overall, these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to modernize Algeria’s transport sector and improve service delivery for its citizens.
