DAKHLA (Sahrawi Refugee Camps) – The 10th Congress of the General Union of Workers of Sakia El-Hamra and Oued-Eddaheb (UGTSARIO) concluded on Sunday at the Dakhla refugee camp, with participants reaffirming their commitment to the continued struggle for the legitimate objectives of the Sahrawi people.
In the final communiqué, the role of Sahrawi workers as front-runners in the struggle for liberation and nation-building was underscored, emphasizing the importance of endurance and sacrifice in the pursuit of total independence and return to their homeland. Participants highlighted the collective efforts made for the Sahrawi cause and called upon trade union organizations around the world to express solidarity and support for the Sahrawi people in their legitimate quest for freedom, justice, and self-determination.
To bolster this call for international solidarity, messages were dispatched to labor unions in Algeria, Mauritania, Spain, South Africa, as well as to the Arab Trade Union Confederation, the Cuban Workers’ Central Union, and several other labor organizations across the globe. These communications aimed to enhance cooperative efforts in advocating for the Sahrawi cause.
The congress attendees also conveyed a message to Brahim Ghali, the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, reiterating their unwavering support for the Sahrawi political leadership in fulfilling the aspirations of the Sahrawi people towards freedom and independence. Furthermore, participants expressed words of solidarity with the fighters of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army (ALPS), Sahrawis residing in occupied territories, and the Sahrawi diaspora.
Amid these discussions, Nafai Ahmed Mohamed was elected as the new Secretary-General of UGTSARIO for a four-year term, as announced by the congress’s election committee. This congress, held under the theme “Sahrawi Workers: Commitment and Fidelity to the Martyrs,” was attended by 400 Sahrawi delegates and approximately 80 foreign participants from Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia, honoring the memory of Martyr Ibrahim El-Mahdjoub.
