Summary of the Announcement by Minister Ouacim Kouidri on Advances in Pharmaceutical Industry

On Monday, Algerian Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry Ouacim Kouidri announced significant developments in the country’s healthcare sector. Notably, the government will soon lay the foundation for a new cellular therapy unit aimed at treating complex diseases, including cancers and strokes. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Group Saidal and the esteemed Karolinska Institute from Sweden, introducing advanced therapeutic technologies to Algeria, which have been prevalent globally for the past 18 years.

This modern treatment facility is expected to address between 86 and 90 complex health conditions, with nearly half being various forms of cancer, such as leukemia. Minister Kouidri stated that the establishment of this unit would position Saidal as a potential continental leader in cellular therapy.

In conjunction with this groundbreaking project, the Ministry is also in the process of creating a legal framework to incorporate this innovative treatment into the national healthcare system. This will facilitate necessary regulatory adjustments and ensure that patients have access to the latest therapeutic options.

Additionally, Kouidri revealed further plans to establish a pharmaceutical production unit in Tamanrasset, or another southern region, to manufacture medications specifically targeting tropical diseases. This initiative will enhance Algeria’s ability to respond promptly and effectively to outbreaks of such illnesses.

Regarding local production of insulin pens, Kouidri announced that two companies are about to commence manufacturing, increasing the total number of local manufacturers in this sector to four, some of which have begun exporting their products. This move is part of Algeria’s broader strategy to bolster its self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical production.

Currently, domestically produced medicines account for approximately 79% of Algeria’s total drug needs. To enhance this further, Kouidri urged economic operators to invest more in raw materials and medical supplies, as around 98% of these resources are currently imported.

The Minister emphasized Algeria’s remarkable progress in pharmaceutical production, highlighting that out of 600 pharmaceutical factories across Africa, 218 are located in Algeria, which represents about 30% of the continent’s pharmaceutical industry.

In conclusion, these initiatives signify a committed effort by the Algerian government to modernize its healthcare capabilities, reduce dependence on imports, and foster domestic pharmaceutical innovation, thereby improving health outcomes for its population.
