Summary of the National Cancer Prevention and Control Forum

The National Commission for Cancer Prevention and Control is set to host a significant forum aimed at formulating a national cancer strategy for 2025-2035. Scheduled for May 3-4, 2023, at the "Abdelatif-Rahal" International Conference Center in Algiers, this event will gather over 600 participants from diverse sectors related to healthcare and oncology.

Context and Objectives

The forum follows the establishment of thematic committees on February 4, which included specialists and stakeholders from various fields linked to cancer. The primary goal is to devise a comprehensive strategy that addresses cancer prevention, treatment, and support within the national health framework.

During this forum, participants will assess the National Cancer Control Plan (2015-2019) and review the current state of oncological care in Algeria. Experts will present recommendations and share successful international practices to enhance local strategies.

Workshop Topics

Seven workshops will be conducted, focusing on distinct aspects of cancer prevention and management:

  1. Tobacco and Cancer: Examining correlations between smoking, obesity, nutrition, and vaccination.

  2. Early Detection: Emphasizing screenings for cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers.

  3. Diagnostics: Investigating laboratory conditions, biochemistry, and pathology.

  4. Patient Pathway: Enhancing the patient support and treatment journey.

  5. Medications and Medical Devices: Discussing the availability and accessibility of treatment options.

  6. Funding and Governance: Addressing financial and structural support for cancer initiatives.

  7. Training and Scientific Research: Focusing on elevating the level of education and ongoing research in oncology.

Current Cancer Landscape

Pr. Adda Bounedjar, the Commission’s president, highlighted alarming statistics, reporting over 60,000 new cancer cases annually in Algeria. Colorectal cancer is the most common among men, followed by prostate and lung cancers. Among women, breast cancer leads with approximately 15,000 cases each year, with colorectal, cervical, and ovarian cancers following.

Available Resources and Future Initiatives

Bounedjar reassured that Algeria has the necessary human resources and financial backing to combat cancer. The country plans to enhance its infrastructure by establishing seven new cancer treatment centers, supplementing the existing ten, and increasing the number of radiotherapy machines to 90 by the next year.

To bolster funding for cancer initiatives, there are proposals to raise taxes on tobacco products, which would contribute to the newly expanded Cancer Control Fund. This move aims to implement an effective national strategy for cancer prevention and treatment.

The forum represents a crucial step towards developing comprehensive measures that address the increasing burden of cancer in Algeria, ensuring that the nation is well-equipped to handle this pressing health challenge over the next decade.
