Title: The Need for Digital Transformation in Algerian Journalism: A Strategic Approach

On Monday in Algiers, experts in the field of information emphasized the pressing need for digital transformation within the media sector. This transformation hinges on a continuous training strategy, enhanced digital infrastructure, and increased presence in cyberspace, as discussed during the 4th Regional Meeting of Journalists and Media Professionals.

Key Insights from the Meeting

Karim Daouadji, head of the Information Sciences Department at the University of Algiers 3, stressed the necessity for journalists to adapt to industry changes. He advocated for the training of versatile journalists who are proficient in the latest techniques and aware of ongoing developments. Daouadji highlighted the importance of equipping national media to effectively represent Algeria on the international stage and counter potential attacks, necessitating advancements in technological infrastructure.

He noted that academic training in digital transformation should complement practical, professional training. Thus, it’s crucial for universities to align their curricula with current trends, ensuring students acquire relevant knowledge.

Addressing Digital Challenges

Mohamed Chihat, a professor at the same faculty, emphasized the need for journalists to navigate challenges brought on by digital transformation, especially regarding social media. He highlighted the importance of training journalists to identify the proliferation of misinformation online. Adequate training would empower journalists to leverage artificial intelligence tools effectively in content creation and information gathering.

Mehdi Boukaouma, also a professor nearby, pointed out that the rise of artificial intelligence and misinformation calls for heightened professionalism within the media sector. Journalists must possess a deep understanding of both regional and international issues to effectively navigate today’s complex information landscape.

Embracing Digital Tools

Ahmed Bouchareb, Secretary General of the Information and Communication Federation (affiliated with the General Union of Algerian Workers – UGTA), discussed the urgency for national media to embrace digital transformation. He noted that as newsrooms globally evolve rapidly, journalists must integrate digital tools into their workflows to stay relevant.

Similarly, Slimane Abdouche, president of the National Organization of Algerian Journalists, echoed the sentiment for ongoing training and professional development. He urged that training programs must adapt to the shifting dynamics in both local and international media, proposing that a unified national media front is essential to counteract negative narratives against Algeria’s institutions and sovereignty.

Workshop Focus Areas

This significant meeting included four workshops focusing on several crucial topics: the new legal framework governing the media sector, professional ethics, the current state of audio-visual and print media in the era of AI and 5G, the role of institutional communication in shaping Algeria’s image, and the need for specialized, continuous training for emerging media professions.

In conclusion, the discussions at the 4th Regional Meeting highlighted a clear consensus: the future of the media sector in Algeria relies heavily on adapting to digital transformation through effective training and robust infrastructure development. This collective effort is crucial for ensuring that Algerian journalists can thrive amidst evolving technological landscapes while maintaining a strong and credible presence on both domestic and international fronts.
