On Thursday, Azouz Nasri, the President of the Council of the Nation in Algeria, hosted a delegation from Nicaragua participating in the International Forum on Colonialism Crimes. The Nicaraguan delegation included Tardencilla Orlando, a political advisor to the President, and historian John Edson Hodgson Deerings, a member of the National Assembly and the Sandinista National Liberation Front’s political office.
This meeting occurred alongside the forum organized by the Algerian Ministry of Mujahideen and Victims of Decolonization. The forum was themed "The Crimes of Colonialism in Human History: From Collective Memory Wounds to the Right to Historical Justice," which coincided with the 63rd anniversary of Algeria’s recovery of national sovereignty.
During the meeting, both parties reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for global liberation and justice causes. They emphasized recognizing colonialism crimes as essential for the rehabilitation of peoples. The discussions also underscored the historical ties between Algeria and Nicaragua, rooted in solidarity, political alignment, and a common defense of just causes at international forums.
Nasri highlighted the significance of the Nicaraguan delegation’s participation in this historically symbolic event. He expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, aiming for a quality relationship under the leadership of Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega.
In response, the Nicaraguan representatives expressed pride in their historical relationship with Algeria. They noted that the Algerian Revolution served as an inspiration for the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua, particularly regarding sacrifice, patriotism, and the quest for self-determination and respect for sovereignty.
The delegation conveyed a commitment to expanding cooperation, particularly in memorial issues, higher education support, and parliamentary collaboration. They recognized Algeria’s vital role as a regional actor advocating for just causes, including the Palestinian issue and Western Sahara.
Both sides underscored the importance of ongoing parliamentary coordination to enhance their friendship and cooperation, grounded in shared values of solidarity, mutual respect, and justice.
