License Allocation
The license bidding results indicated Mobilis, under the name ATM, secured the top position with a financial commitment of 22.19 billion DA. Ooredoo followed closely in second place with a bid of 21 billion DA, while Djezzy came third, committing 20.7 billion DA. Each license is valid for 15 years and is renewable, with operators also submitting their choices of frequency bands.
Government Perspective
Sid Ali Zerrouki, Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, emphasized the strategic significance of this initiative. He stated that the move is not just a technical upgrade but a firm investment in Algeria’s future, impacting economic growth, youth potential, and the nation’s position in the global digital landscape. Zerrouki believes that the introduction of 5G will catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting the development of smart cities and enhancing public policies through artificial intelligence and big data integration.
Regulatory Vision
Mohamed El Hadi Hannachi, the president of ARPCE, noted that the rollout of 5G would spurt economic development and improve public services. Hannachi reassured that the regulatory body would support the selected operators in a transparent and fair manner.
Operators’ Commitment
Representatives from the winning operators expressed their readiness to implement this technology. Chawki Boukhazani, CEO of Mobilis, highlighted their commitment to the transition to 5G, aligning it with the state’s strategic goals. Roni Tohme, the CEO of Ooredoo, reiterated their dedication to providing advanced solutions focusing on quality and innovation, thus contributing to sustainable socio-economic development. Boumediene Senouci, CEO of Djezzy, stressed the responsibility of operators to adapt to technological changes and meet the demands of society and the economy.
Djezzy’s 5G Rollout Plans
Djezzy has indicated its readiness to gradually launch its 5G network, planning to offer its first commercial services within the next three months. The operator will prioritize eight regions: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Sétif, Skikda, Ouargla, Tlemcen, and Blida.
