Summary of the Second National Medical Meeting on Endocrine Diseases and Childhood Diabetes

On Thursday, in Algiers, Meriem Cherfi, the National Delegate for Child Protection, inaugurated the second national medical meeting focusing on endocrine diseases and diabetes in children. The event attracted both local and international experts and was organized by the Algerian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology (SAEDP).

During the meeting, Cherfi praised the Ministry of Health’s strategy that emphasizes early screening for newborns. This initiative aims to detect certain diseases, such as hypothyroidism, which could lead to mental disabilities if not identified in time.

Fatma Bousmaha, representing the Ministry of Health, confirmed that early screening programs for two significant conditions—hypothyroidism and amino acid deficiency—have been initiated. These conditions are crucial as they affect the child’s brain development. Bousmaha reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting scientific initiatives focused on improving early detection of diseases impacting children’s health, particularly those related to endocrine disorders.

She highlighted the importance of such meetings as vital platforms for sharing experiences and enhancing collaboration among medical professionals and researchers, thus promoting the healthy growth and well-being of children.

Dr. Asmahane Ladjouze, the president of the SAEDP, detailed that the early screening for the identified conditions involves a blood sample collected from newborns between the ages of 3 and 5 days.

The WHO representative in Algeria, Dr. Phanuel Habimana, acknowledged the significant advances Algeria has made in health care and reiterated the organization’s ongoing support for Algeria’s efforts to combat various diseases.

This meeting not only underscores Algeria’s commitment to addressing pediatric health issues but also serves to enhance cooperation and knowledge exchange among professionals in the medical field, ultimately benefiting the younger population’s health.
