Production of Desalination Plant in Oran Reaches New Heights
The desalination plant in Cap Blanc, located west of Oran, has recently achieved a daily production capacity of 190,000 cubic meters of seawater. This announcement was made by Oussama Helaïli, director of the Société de l’Eau et de l’Assainissement d’Oran (SEOR), during a press conference held at SEOR’s headquarters.
The conference, which was focused on preparations for the upcoming Aïd El-Adha and the summer season, also highlighted that the plant is set to reach a production capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day before the holiday, which represents two-thirds of its maximum capacity.
This facility, inaugurated in February by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has significantly boosted potable water production in the Oran region, raising it to a total of 600,000 cubic meters daily. This increase has had a positive effect on water supply, particularly in the western municipalities of Aïn El-Turck and Boutlelis, as well as in Aïn El-Beïda, El-Hassi, and the new urban center of Ahmed Zabana. The eastern part of the wilaya will also benefit once the plant fully reaches its capacity.
Helaïli also indicated that neighboring wilayas such as Aïn Temouchent, Sidi Bel Abbes, Mascara, Relizane, and Mostaganem will indirectly gain from the Cap Blanc desalination plant. The water resources from this plant, along with those from the Chatt El-Hilal desalination plant in Aïn Temouchent and reservoirs in Cheliff, Kerrada (Mostaganem), and Gargar (Relizane), will be redistributed to these regions.
Regarding preparations for Aïd El-Adha, Houari Khodja, director of distribution at SEOR, announced that the company received an additional quota of 50,000 cubic meters from the Cheliff and Kerrada reservoirs, raising the total production capacity to 650,000 cubic meters during the festive period. SEOR is also working diligently to fill its reservoirs, which have a combined capacity of 800,000 cubic meters, to meet the increased demand for potable water throughout the week of Aïd.
To enhance transparency and communication, SEOR is organizing field visits for journalists to showcase the infrastructure related to the Cap Blanc plant. This includes several key facilities such as the Aïn Tessa pumping station (with a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters), and the Aïn Tessa (50,000 cubic meters) and Bousfer (30,000 cubic meters) reservoirs, as well as pressure reduction systems in the area.
In summary, the advancements made at the Cap Blanc desalination plant mark a crucial step forward in addressing water scarcity in Oran and surrounding areas. With its planned capacity increases and ongoing strategic developments, including robust preparations for the Aïd El-Adha celebration, the SEOR is ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for the region.
