Masstagane, Algeria – University’s Role in National Development

On Tuesday, during a visit to the Mostaganem province, Kamel Beddari, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasized the university’s crucial role in supporting Algeria’s development goals for the period of 2024-2029. In conjunction with the launch of a sustainable project to plant 1,000 argan trees at a pilot farm in Hassi Mameche, the minister stated the importance of aligning university initiatives with national development strategies.

Beddari highlighted that universities are integral to fostering development and are now recognized as pivotal tools for achieving Algeria’s 2024-2029 vision. This current initiative is part of a broader sectoral program aimed at creating wealth and diversifying the country’s economy and agriculture. He noted the centrality of entrepreneurial support within higher education, with a focus on establishing startups and small enterprises. This year, the University "Abdelhamid Ben Badis" in Mostaganem is set to launch approximately 60 small businesses and 20 startups, illustrating significant strides in academic entrepreneurship.

During his visit, the minister explored an automated irrigation system for trees, demonstrating innovative techniques in agriculture, and examined a sunflower plantation initiative. He reiterated that economic development is anchored in education, scientific research, innovation, and wealth generation at both local and national levels, all aimed at addressing community needs and enhancing citizen well-being.

In addition, Beddari met with students who are developing projects and small enterprises in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, and fisheries. He encouraged these students to adopt sound economic plans and engage directly with the market while stressing the importance of utilizing their educational experiences in commercializing products effectively.

The minister’s visit also included the signing of various framework agreements with local agricultural, fisheries, and environmental services. A significant collaboration was established between the "Abdelhamid Ibn Badis" University of Mostaganem and the Scientific and Technical Research Center on Arid Regions in Biskra. This partnership aims to strengthen research and technological advancement in arid zone management.

Furthermore, Beddari presided over an awards ceremony celebrating students who excelled in both national and international competitions. These accolades included recognition for winning the international best doctoral thesis contest in Kuwait and the national seawater desalination innovation competition "Innovation Algérie."

The "Abdelhamid Ibn Badis" University of Mostaganem operates three pilot farms located in Hassi Mameche, Mazaghran, and Hadjadj. Under the sectoral initiative, it has launched projects covering 10 hectares for planting argan trees and 2.5 hectares of sunflowers, showcasing a commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability.

By reinforcing the links between education, research, and practical application in agriculture, the ministry aims to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and researchers dedicated to meeting Algeria’s future challenges. This strategic focus not only enhances the local economy but also aligns with environmental sustainability goals, making significant strides towards a diversified and robust agricultural sector in Algeria.

In summary, Kamel Beddari’s visit to Mostaganem exemplifies the government’s commitment to integrating higher education with national development objectives, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Through collaborative projects and support for budding entrepreneurs, Algeria is positioning itself for a dynamic economic future.
