UN Condemns Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

On Tuesday, Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian chief, addressed the Security Council, condemning the "deliberate and shameless" imposition of inhumane conditions on civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories. His remarks came during a meeting that focused on the dire situation in Gaza, which has been ravaged by over a year and a half of violence and is now facing the severe threat of famine.

Fletcher urged Security Council members to take decisive action to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, questioning what future generations would think of our collective failure to end the atrocities witnessed daily in Gaza. He emphasized the need for humanity, justice, and reason to prevail in this ongoing crisis.

According to Fletcher, no food, water, medicine, or shelter has entered the Gaza Strip for over ten weeks, forcing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into confinement as they are increasingly displaced. The humanitarian crisis impacts the entire population of approximately 2.2 million people, all of whom are at risk of famine. The limited hospitals that remain functional are overwhelmed, struggling to provide care amid ongoing bombardment.

Angelica Jacome, the Director of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in New York, highlighted alarming statistics regarding malnutrition among the Palestinian population. She warned that nearly 71% of Palestinian children under five are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition between May 2025 and April 2026, with over 14,000 cases expected to be severe. Additionally, around 17,000 pregnant and nursing women will require treatment for acute malnutrition during the same timeframe.

Jacome described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic," reporting that food insecurity is acute and the risk of famine is imminent. Citing a recent analysis from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), she confirmed that Gaza’s residents remain exposed to critical risks. The systemic collapse of essential living conditions has resulted in severe dietary shortages, declining health, crumbling livelihoods, and deteriorating social structures, leading entire communities into despair, devastation, and death.

Overall, the combined assessments of Fletcher and Jacome paint a harrowing picture of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention and support to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
