Summary of the Importance of Agricultural Insurance in Algeria

On Monday in Relizane, Cherif Benhabiles, the General Director of the National Agricultural Mutual Insurance Fund (CNMA), emphasized the critical role of agricultural insurance in bolstering national food security and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural investments. This statement was made during a regional meeting focused on strategic agricultural sectors, specifically under the theme “Protection and Sustainable Development of the Cereal Sector: Issues, Challenges, and Action Mechanisms.”

Benhabiles highlighted that agricultural insurance is fundamental in supporting sustainable development goals, stating that it is key to achieving food security in Algeria. He pointed out that this form of insurance directly aids in the continuity of food production, particularly in response to climate-related adversities that threaten agriculture, especially in vital sectors like cereals.

Djamel Amari, the risk director at CNMA, elaborated on the various insurance models designed to protect agricultural activities from disasters. He outlined the technical mechanisms the CNMA offers to assist the cereal sector, detailing the insurance products available, which cover risks such as hail, frost, floods, and fires. The CNMA operates through a network of 71 regional funds and 580 local offices across the country to provide these services.

Relizane’s governor, Kamel Berkane, reiterated the essential importance of the cereal sector in agriculture and confirmed that the government is actively working to enhance its development. This includes implementing strategic national plans aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in this crucial sector.

The meeting took place at the "M’hamed Issiakhem" Cultural Center and was attended by local authorities, CNMA officials, Abdelghani Benali (Secretary General of the National Interprofessional Council of the Cereal Sector), and numerous local producers and operators involved in seed multiplication, along with directors from agricultural services and various chambers of agriculture from twenty provinces.

This gathering served as a platform to discuss the strategic importance of agricultural insurance in securing food resources, ensuring agricultural sustainability, and promoting economic stability for farmers and stakeholders within the cereal sector. The dialogue emphasized a collective effort towards enhancing agricultural resilience through effective insurance mechanisms in the face of climate challenges.

In summary, the dialogue on agricultural insurance underscores its pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s food supply and supporting farmers against unpredictable risks. The engagement of government and technical bodies like CNMA signifies a commitment to building a robust agricultural sector that can thrive despite existing challenges.
