Strengthening Algeria-Ghana Relations: A Historical and Future Perspective
On a recent visit to Algeria, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa asserted that the relationship between Algeria and Ghana is currently thriving, emphasizing both nations’ commitment to strengthening their bilateral ties. After a meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Mr. Ablakwa highlighted the historical connections that bind the two countries, particularly their shared struggles against colonialism and their roles in establishing key African organizations, such as the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Both nations see the continuation of these collaborations as essential for fostering a world centered on humanity, love, and trust.
Mr. Ablakwa articulated Ghana’s perspective on international relations, advocating for partnerships grounded in trust and mutual benefit rather than opportunistic approaches. He expressed a desire to extend these principles to other countries within the Sahel region, where challenges such as terrorism and violent extremism present significant threats to stability.
The discussion with President Tebboune also focused on the pressing need for enhanced cooperation in defense to combat the growing presence of terrorist groups in surrounding areas like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The Ghanaian minister acknowledged Ghana’s President John Mahama’s ongoing mediation efforts in the region, underscoring that dialogue and negotiations should take precedence over violent confrontations. This approach aligns with Algeria’s stance, as President Tebboune has expressed support for Mahama’s diplomatic initiatives.
During the meeting, Mr. Ablakwa also delivered heartfelt greetings from President Mahama and conveyed an invitation for his Ghanaian counterpart to visit Algeria before the year’s end. The discussions extended to fruitful talks with Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf. This resulted in the endorsement of an agreement to exempt holders of diplomatic passports from visa requirements, along with plans to establish similar provisions for ordinary passport holders, aimed at boosting commercial exchanges.
Moreover, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that efforts are underway to establish a direct flight route between Algiers and Accra. He also expressed Ghana’s aspirations to increase opportunities for scholarships for Ghanaian students, strengthen economic ties, and forge new partnerships for the supply of oil and gas to Ghana.
