Summary of the First African School Games
Algeria is set to host the inaugural African School Games this summer, with events scheduled to take place from July 25 to August 5 in four cities: Skikda, Annaba, Sétif, and Constantine. The participation in these games will be free for all participating countries, a decision announced by Amar Brahmia, the president of the organizing committee. This initiative, decided in consultation with the Minister of Sports, Walid Sadi, reflects Algeria’s commitment to solidarity within Africa.
Joao Manuel Da Costa Alegre Afonso, the first vice-president of the African National Olympic Committees Association (ACNOA), highlighted that Algeria is also considering charter flights to assist delegations facing financial constraints. This could enhance participation and ensure the success of the event. The discussions in Alger included representatives from 54 African National Olympic Committees, focusing on the strategic importance of the games for developing sports movements and promoting Olympic values across the continent.
These games, taking place under the esteemed patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and under the aegis of ACNOA and the International School Sports Federation (FISS), aim to support young athletes as they prepare for major competitions, including the African Youth Games in December 2025 in Luanda, the Youth Olympic Games in 2026 in Dakar, and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
The African School Games will feature 25 disciplines, encompassing athletics, swimming, judo, taekwondo, skateboarding, beach volleyball, basketball (3×3), and football. Each region within ACNOA will have the opportunity to qualify two national teams for team sports.
Beyond sporting competition, the games aim to instill educational and civic values through sports, uncover emerging talents, and strengthen athletic cooperation among African nations. The event serves as a significant platform for Algeria to showcase its commitment to developing school sports and its capability to host international events.
Conclusion
The African School Games represent a milestone for youth athleticism in Africa, emphasizing both athletic competitiveness and community spirit.
