BOUIRA – Significant Progress in Algeria’s Pharmaceutical Industry

In recent years, Algeria has witnessed remarkable advancements in its pharmaceutical industry and medication production, as highlighted by the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Ouacim Kouidri, during his visit to Bouira. Kouidri expressed his satisfaction with the region’s potential and ongoing projects in the pharmaceutical sector. He emphasized the importance of encouraging local operators and industries to invest in the production of medical devices and chemical products.

Currently, Algeria imports around 129,000 pharmaceutical products. Kouidri urged local businesses to invest in the domestic production of these items to reduce import costs. He pointed out that there are numerous products and reagents that can be manufactured within the country, which would alleviate the burden of imports. During his visit, he inspected two pharmaceutical factories, Rosaspharm and Magpharm, located in Oued El Bardi, where approximately 200 different reagents are produced.

The minister conveyed optimism about the country’s capacity to meet these challenges, remarking that local industries have the necessary skills and resources. He noted that while Algeria has commenced production of raw materials for medication, there remains significant potential for startups and micro-enterprises to produce additional inputs and chemical products.

Before his tour of Bouira, Kouidri received an in-depth presentation on various structural projects related to the pharmaceutical sector within the region. He also explored the future industrial area of Dirah, situated in the southern part of Bouira, which will cover 250 hectares.

The minister then traveled to Lakhdaria, located in the western part of Bouira, where he visited two other pharmaceutical production facilities, Diagnopharm and CPCM Bouzid, both contributing to the region’s industrial capabilities.

In summary, Algeria’s pharmaceutical sector is on an upward trajectory thanks to local investments and initiatives aimed at enhancing production capabilities. The government is committed to fostering an environment conducive to growth, which will lead to greater self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals and reduced dependency on imports. This strategic focus on local production not only promises economic benefits but also seeks to improve access to essential medications for the Algerian population.
