Lamia Brik: Promoting Children’s Literature in El-Meghaier

Lamia Brik, a talented writer from El-Meghaier, is dedicated to enriching children’s literature. Growing up in a supportive family that valued creativity, she embraced her passion for writing early on. At 38, Brik focuses on engaging young readers through well-crafted letters and stories that encompass educational and constructive themes.

With a degree in English from Hadj Lakhdar University in Batna, Brik published her first children’s books, "El-Hadjar wel Azhar" (Stones and Flowers) and "El-Faracha El-Beida" (White Butterfly), in 2018. Her literary endeavors continued with an interactive story, "El-Kerd Yatassellak" (The Climbing Monkey), featuring colorful illustrations aimed at stimulating children’s literary imaginations.

In an interview with APS, Brik expressed her plans to release a collection of short stories titled "Esseghir Yataâlem" (The Child Learns). Using simple language and relatable characters, she aims to instill social values in Algeria’s youth.

Brik actively participates in various cultural events, including the International Book Fair in Algiers during 2018 and 2019. She emphasizes the significance of illustrated stories as comprehensive educational tools, believing that visual elements facilitate children’s understanding and enhance their cognitive skills.

Despite the presence of numerous literary works, she argues that children’s literature deserves more recognition and development, particularly amid the distractions posed by social media and electronic games.

Celebrating Algeria’s National Artist Day on June 8, 2023, Brik welcomed the establishment of the artist status law, viewing it as a significant step in the protection of artists’ rights and acknowledgment of their cultural contributions.

Through her work, Lamia Brik continues to inspire young readers and advocate for the importance of children’s literature in fostering imagination and learning.
