He highlighted that Algeria stands out among countries with integrated social security systems and noted the country’s commitment to integrating 500,000 youths into permanent jobs while simultaneously reducing the retirement age—contrasting this with international trends of layoffs and increasing retirement ages in other nations.

He reiterated that the existing laws reflect the nature and efficacy of the current social security structure. Regarding healthcare, he mentioned that in 2024, social security funds reimbursed 7,400 medications, covering 61% of health-related expenditures under the social security umbrella. The minister noted the significant role of the mutual health system, which serves over 1.6 million members, providing an additional 20% reimbursement on medications and medical services.

Bentaleb confirmed that social security funds have maintained a balanced status since 2021, with the exception of the National Retirement Fund, which is making strides toward balance as well. The proposed legislation on maternity leave was clarified to ensure strict and transparent implementation.

The discussions within the Council of the Nation were largely positive, with members recognizing that the newly introduced provisions in the law would enhance the social rights of working women. They believed these changes would facilitate a better balance between professional and family life and ensure the protection of infants by allowing new mothers to care for their children in critical early months.
