Summary of Social Security Enhancements in Algeria
On Monday in Algiers, Mr. Azouz Nasri, the President of the National Council, praised the significant efforts being made in the sectors of Labor and Social Security under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This praise came during a plenary session dedicated to discussing a draft law concerning social security insurance, as reported by the High Chamber of Parliament.
During the session, Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Fayçal Bentaleb, highlighted that the revision of social insurance laws is aligned with President Tebboune’s directives. The aim is to strengthen women’s rights in the workforce and facilitate a balance between their professional and family obligations.
Minister Bentaleb expressed his satisfaction with the national social security system, which addresses nine key areas outlined in International Labour Organization (ILO) convention n°102. These areas include health insurance, maternity leave, workplace accidents, occupational diseases, unemployment, family allowances, disability, retirement, and death benefits. Additionally, the system also covers paid leaves and unemployment caused by adverse weather in the construction and hydraulic sectors. This comprehensive system benefits over 30 million individuals, making it the most extensive and inclusive in the region.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing social coverage while ensuring the sustainability of the social security system for the benefit of workers and covered individuals. The Health, Social Affairs, Labor, and National Solidarity Commission of the National Council is actively preparing a supplementary report on this draft law, which will be discussed in a plenary session scheduled for July 7.
This session marks a crucial step in advancing Algeria’s social security framework, aiming for broader protection and support for citizens, especially women in the workforce, while reinforcing the state’s role in ensuring durable support systems for all workers.
