Summary of UN Security Council A3+ Statement on the Situation in Afghanistan

On Monday in New York, the A3+ group within the UN Security Council—comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana—voiced its unwavering support for the Afghan people amid the ongoing challenges and persistent security threats they face.

During a dedicated meeting on Afghanistan, Carolyn Rodrigues, Guyana’s permanent representative to the UN, highlighted the multifaceted difficulties confronting the Afghan populace. These challenges include widespread poverty, high unemployment rates, enduring security threats, and a severe humanitarian crisis.

The group expressed its concern over the decline in international financial assistance, which has exacerbated an already precarious economic situation. Approximately half of Afghanistan’s population requires crucial support due to food insecurity, mass displacement, natural disasters, climate change effects, economic difficulties, and limited access to basic services. The representatives pointed out that the closure of hundreds of healthcare facilities and nutritional centers has deprived millions of essential primary health care and life-saving treatments. Alarmingly, projections suggest that around 3.5 million children will suffer from malnutrition by 2025.

In light of these pressing issues, the A3+ group urged international donors and humanitarian partners to increase their contributions and support. They expressed deep concern regarding reports of violence and arrests targeting humanitarian workers, including 13 UN employees, which further complicates the situation.

Moreover, Rodrigues reiterated the group’s belief in the importance of ensuring full and equal participation of women in all sectors, as a vital aspect of Afghanistan’s development and prosperity.

Regarding the security landscape, the A3+ group called for intensified counter-terrorism efforts to bolster stability and security both in Afghanistan and the surrounding region. The acknowledgment of these critical issues corroborates the pressing need for a coordinated and robust international response to aid the Afghan people in overcoming their ongoing hardships.
