le groupe A3+ appelle les parties au conflit au Soudan à instaurer un cessez-le-feu à l’occasion du Ramadhan
The A3+ group, comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana, issued a strong appeal in New York on Thursday to the warring factions in Sudan, urging them to capitalize on the sacred month of Ramadan by implementing an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. They also called for the initiation of dialogue aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
In a statement presented on behalf of the A3+ group during a UN Security Council meeting discussing the situation in Sudan, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, emphasized the importance of the Ramadan period as an opportunity for peaceful resolution rather than violence. Highlighting the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Bendjama pointed out that military solutions are ineffective in resolving the crisis. He reiterated that the only viable route to peace lies through a political process led by the Sudanese themselves.
The A3+ group also called for a public condemnation of any foreign interference in Sudanese affairs, underlining the significance of safeguarding the rights and protection of civilians amidst escalating violence. They criticized the RSF’s repeated attacks against civilians and underscored the dire need for safeguarding vulnerable groups, particularly women, girls, and children, who are disproportionately affected by the conflict.
Further condemnation was voiced regarding all forms of civilian rights violations occurring in Sudan. The group insisted on the need to protect civilians and called for thorough investigations to hold perpetrators accountable. They urged the RSF to immediately cease acts of violence against civilians and underscored the importance of providing comprehensive protection for women and children who are subjected to increasing atrocities.
The A3+ group also highlighted the urgent need to stop assaults on healthcare infrastructure, emphasizing that hospitals and medical facilities must not be targets in the conflict. They called upon all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to international law, particularly humanitarian laws, and to honor commitments made in Djeddah in May 2023 in relation to the protection of civilians.
Additionally, the A3+ group stressed the necessity of enhancing humanitarian assistance for the Sudanese population. They called for mobilizing resources to finance humanitarian needs and response plans, recognizing that a collective effort is crucial to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Through urging for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of dialogue, the A3+ group aims to foster an environment conducive to peace and security in Sudan. They remain committed to advocating for the protection of civilians and addressing the urgent humanitarian needs arising from the conflict, which has already had devastating impacts on the Sudanese population.
