On May 25, 2025, Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Algeria’s Chief of Staff and Minister Delegate to the Ministry of National Defense (MDN), presided over a national seminar titled "The African Sahel: Security and Development Challenges Amid Geopolitical Rivalries." This event, held at the National Army Circle, was organized by the Information and Communication Directorate of MDN.
Key officials attended, including national leaders like the President of the Council of the Nation, the Prime Minister, and various ministers, military commanders, and academic experts. The seminar commenced with a welcoming address from General Chanegriha, who emphasized Algeria’s commitment to its fundamental principles of good neighborliness, territorial integrity, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue.
The General reiterated Algeria’s consistent foreign policy of mutual respect, non-interference, and dedication to political stability in the Sahel region. Algeria remains engaged in collaborative military initiatives, particularly through the Joint Operational Staff Committee (CEMOC), to bolster regional security and defense capabilities.
General Chanegriha highlighted the historical and humanitarian ties that bond Algeria with Sahel nations, translating into economic and social development initiatives aimed at alleviating regional challenges. He underscored Algeria’s ongoing assistance through humanitarian aid and funding regional development projects, encouraging dignified living conditions and thwarting destabilizing initiatives.
Despite external attempts to disrupt Algeria’s influential role in the Sahel, the General affirmed the country’s commitment to peace and security, guided by the strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Following the opening remarks, several addresses were delivered. Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf initiated discussions on strategies for achieving security and development in the Sahel. He reflected on the significance of the seminar coinciding with Africa Day, celebrating the establishment of the African Union’s foundations in 1963. Attaf emphasized Algeria’s resilience and dedication to unity among African states.
Subsequent speakers included Malika Salma Haddadi, Vice President of the African Union Commission, who addressed security challenges in the Sahel. Other presentations focused on Algeria’s role in fostering peace and challenges arising from its colonial history, evaluating new international actors in the region. The seminar allowed for vibrant discussions, contributing to comprehensive analyses and recommendations for future actions.
The event underscored Algeria’s pivotal position in promoting security, stability, and development in the Sahel, addressing regional challenges with shared commitment and solidarity among neighboring countries.
