Le CNDH salue l’engagement de l’Etat pour la promotion des droits de l’enfant
Summary of the CNDH’s Commitment to Children’s Rights in Algeria
On Saturday, the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) of Algeria released a statement commending the government’s dedication to ensuring the care, protection, and promotion of children’s rights. This comes just before International Children’s Day on June 1, a time to reflect on progress made and the challenges that lie ahead.
The CNDH emphasized the importance of coordinated and collective action involving civil society, families, and public authorities to address these challenges effectively. They highlighted the government’s progressive legislation aimed at strengthening children’s rights, noting Algeria’s status as one of the first countries to ratify the International Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992. This commitment led to the adaptation of national laws, including Law No. 15-12 on child protection, aligning with international obligations.
Algeria is recognized for having a robust and integrated legal framework for promoting and protecting children’s rights, pending the finalization of related regulatory texts. According to this framework, children in Algeria are entitled to all their rights, particularly the right to education, which underpins the enforcement of all other rights.
The CNDH also pointed out updates to laws concerning children with special needs, an extension of maternity leave, and enhanced autism care. These measures are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for children and their families.
Furthermore, the Council expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to fulfill Algeria’s international commitments concerning the protection and promotion of children’s rights, particularly through the completion of periodic reports submitted to relevant international human rights bodies.
This comprehensive approach aims to not only safeguard children’s rights but also create a supportive environment for their development and well-being. The CNDH’s call for a collective and structured response signifies an ongoing commitment to ensuring that children in Algeria receive the protection and support they deserve.
