L’auteur franco-algérien Boualem Sansal écoppe de cinq ans d’emprisonnement.

Date:

Boualem Sansal, the Franco-Algerian writer, has been sentenced to five years in prison by a court in Dar El Beida, Algeria, for allegedly threatening national unity and stability. This is half of the ten-year sentence sought by prosecutors. Charges stem from his comments on a French extreme right media outlet regarding Morocco’s claims over territory lost to Algeria during French colonization. His arrest on November 16 heightened tensions due to France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in Western Sahara. Despite being relatively unknown in France, Sansal has gained significant support, with public demonstrations calling for his release.
