The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in Algeria recently announced the issuance of a new series of postage stamps titled « Women and Men of Theater. » This initiative aims to celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage and honor the enduring legacy of significant figures in the performing arts.
The series highlights a distinguished group of Algerian theatrical personalities who have made vital contributions to the evolution of theater in the country. Among the notable figures featured are Mahieddine Bachtarzi, recognized as a pioneer of Algerian theater and a foundational figure in its infrastructure, and Aicha Adjouri, known as Kelthoum, celebrated as one of the first female icons in Algerian theater.
This postage stamp series also pays tribute to prominent individuals in the post-independence theater movement. Some of these include Ould-Abderrahmane Kaki, the founder of the El-Garagouz troupe; Abdelkader Alloula, who effectively blended simplicity with intellectual depth in his works, prompting audiences to reflect and gain awareness; Azzedine Medjoubi, a renowned actor and director known for his influential play « Hafila tassir »; and Sakina Mekkiou, also known as Sonia, who enriched the artistic landscape as an actress and director, leaving behind a valuable artistic legacy.
This initiative aims to honor these artistic figures, ensuring that their contributions to the glory of Algerian theater remain alive in the minds of current and future generations, as reiterated in the ministry’s statement.
