Investment Initiative for Wood Production in Algeria’s Green Dam

In a recent announcement, Djamel Touahria, the Director General of Forests in Algeria, revealed plans for a significant investment project focused on wood production within the Green Dam area. This initiative, set to commence at the end of 2025, aims to enhance the economic potential of the Green Dam while emphasizing sustainable forestry practices.

Investment Focus: Paulownia Trees

The pilot project will involve the plantation of Paulownia trees across a 500-hectare area in the Laghouat province. Touahria described this initiative as a crucial step towards adding value to Algeria’s reforestation efforts and creating a more economically viable Green Dam.

Progress and Goals

To date, reforestation efforts at the Green Dam have covered approximately 24,000 hectares. This initiative has focused on integrating resilient and fruit-bearing tree species such as olive, almond, and pistachio trees. Moving forward, the objective is to rehabilitate and expand the Green Dam’s vegetation, aiming for a targeted area of 400,000 hectares. This expansion will utilize modern techniques that prioritize the selection of tree species compatible with local soil conditions, water availability, and climate.

Fire Prevention Measures

In light of forest fire hazards, Touahria emphasized the mobilization of necessary human and material resources to implement a comprehensive national plan aimed at preventing and combating forest fires. This initiative will be enhanced through the adoption of advanced technological solutions, ensuring a robust response capability.

In summary, the Green Dam project represents not only an ecological initiative but also a calculated economic strategy to leverage Algeria’s forest resources effectively. It combines innovative agricultural methods with sustainability, positioning Algeria for future challenges while fostering local resilience.

Conclusion

As Algeria prepares to initiate this investment in wood production, it showcases a commitment to balancing ecological integrity with economic development. The selected focus on Paulownia trees suggests an innovative approach to addressing both environmental and economic needs in the region, setting a precedent for future forestry initiatives throughout the country.
