Summary of Aquaculture Initiatives in Nâama

The fishing and aquaculture station of Nâama is initiating pioneering pilot experiments to utilize large agricultural irrigation basins for cultivating red tilapia. This initiative focuses on promoting private investment in integrated aquaculture within agricultural environments to boost fish production and enhance crop yields.

Objectives and Implementation

The project aims to engage farmers with irrigation basins that have a minimum capacity of 1,000 cubic meters. According to Hamidi Abdelhalim, the head of the station, collaborations have been established with various sectors to identify interested farmers. In early June, initial experiments commenced with investors and farmers from Aïn Sefra, Mekmen Benamar, and Mecheria, all of whom have irrigation basins ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 cubic meters.

Training and Capacity Building

Farmers participating in the program received training to understand the ecological and technical requirements for effective aquaculture practices. The goal is to integrate at least 30 substantial irrigation basins operated by various farmers before the end of the year. The Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA), alongside sectors such as fishing, aquaculture, and vocational training, is actively involved in preparing farmers to invest in this profitable sector.

Awareness Campaigns

To further encourage the integration of aquaculture with agricultural practices, the fishing and aquaculture station continues to run awareness campaigns aimed at educating farmers on the benefits and techniques of aquaculture. This initiative not only aims to increase the economic viability of farming but also strives to enhance the overall sustainability of the agricultural landscape in the region.

Through these efforts, the Nâama station seeks not only to increase fish production but also to stimulate rural development by blending traditional farming with modern aquaculture practices. This integrated approach is expected to yield significant advancements in both crop and fish outputs, ultimately benefiting the agricultural community in Nâama.
