Expanding Algerian Business Ventures in Mauritania: A Summary of Recent Initiatives
Recently, several Algerian businesses have announced plans to establish new commercial and industrial projects in Mauritania. These initiatives aim to bolster bilateral trade and enhance the presence of Algerian products in the Mauritanian market, aligning with Algeria’s strategy to penetrate African markets, especially in West Africa.
A significant highlight is the establishment of a permanent Algerian market in Nouakchott. This market will feature over 200 retail spaces dedicated exclusively to selling Algerian products. Additionally, plans are underway to build a textile manufacturing facility and a large commercial space for showcasing Algerian agricultural goods.
The president of the Algerian Traders Association in Mauritania, Bilal Fateh Chennouf, remarked that this new market will serve as a lasting venue to connect Algerian goods with Mauritanian consumers. He emphasized that the project is in its final stages and anticipated to launch within the coming months. The market will complement the ongoing Algerian products fair in Nouakchott and will offer rental opportunities for Algerian traders eager to access the Mauritanian market. Chennouf noted that Algerian products are well-received in Mauritania due to their quality and compliance with industry standards.
In the textile sector, Slimane Hadri, the Secretary General of the Algerian Federation of Textiles and Leather, announced plans to create a production, exhibition, and distribution center in Nouakchott. This project will involve collaboration with several Algerian manufacturers and utilize local raw materials. Hadri expressed optimism about launching this initiative in two months, aiming to ensure the sustainable presence of Algerian textile products in Mauritania, especially following positive consumer reception at recent fairs.
Moreover, Hamza Moussous, a manager of an Algerian agricultural export firm, disclosed a partnership with a Mauritanian operator to set up a large commercial space in Nouadhibou for marketing Algerian agricultural products. Plans for expansion to other Mauritanian cities through wholesale and retail sales are also in the pipeline.
Further illustrating the investment potential in Mauritania, Mourad Belaid, the commercial director of the Algerian Group "Belaid," highlighted the fertile ground for investment in the country. His group has been active in areas including construction, agriculture, export, and import for the past three years. Last year, they initiated an agricultural project in Keur Macene, near the Mauritanian-Senegalese border, cultivating potatoes as a first step to explore the local market and potentially broaden their operations in the future.
Belaid also disclosed ongoing development on an integrated real estate project comprising 1,000 housing units, designed as a small city comprehensive of various essential services and facilities. This project is currently under review by the Mauritanian Ministry of Habitat.
Highlighting the strong relations between Algeria and Mauritania, Belaid acknowledged that this environment has facilitated Algerian investors’ entry into the local market, commending the role of the Algerian Union Bank (AUB) in easing commercial transactions.
These initiatives were announced during the recent 7th edition of the Algerian Products Fair in Nouakchott, which took place from May 22 to 28, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, featuring more than 200 Algerian companies from various production and service sectors.
In conclusion, the active engagement of Algerian businesses in Mauritania demonstrates a commitment to strengthening economic ties and enhancing the visibility of Algerian products in West Africa, which could lead to mutual benefits for both nations. Enhancements in agricultural, textile, and real estate sectors reflect a diversified approach to meeting local demand while fostering regional development.
