On Thursday afternoon, a ceremony was held in Tlemcen to celebrate the graduation of the 9th cohort from the African Institute of Water Sciences, Renewable Energies, and Climate Change, marking the 2024-2025 academic year. The event took place at the newly established university hub in Mansourah and was attended by dignitaries, including the President of the Pan-African University, John Kollediati, and Vice President Bolani Akilolu, alongside representatives from collaborative programs and esteemed faculty members.
This graduating class consisted of 82 students from 36 African countries, including nine from Algeria. They completed a two-year program that culminated in earning a master’s degree across four specialized fields: water engineering, water policy, energy engineering, and energy policy, as noted by the institute’s director, Abdelatif Zerga. He highlighted that the students’ dissertations covered topics on water governance, renewable energies, and climate change, with practical internships across more than 20 African nations.
Zerga announced that local authorities have provided a conducive environment for students, enhancing their experience in Tlemcen and encouraging new applicants for the next academic year. He mentioned that 60 new students are expected to enroll in June, including one from the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
John Kollediati expressed gratitude during his speech, acknowledging the efforts of Algerian authorities in supporting African students studying in Algeria and recognizing the academic assistance provided by the University of Tlemcen. He emphasized that these graduates would contribute significantly to capacity-building in their respective nations within their specialized fields.
The ceremony featured the awarding of diplomas and gifts to graduates, as well as special recognition for students who participated in a football tournament organized by the institute. Since its inception in 2014 at the "Abou Bekr Belkaïd" University, approximately 655 students from 45 African countries have graduated from the institute.
The institute runs a broad program focused on enhancing scientific research related to treated wastewater reuse, environmental concerns, living conditions, and climate change. Additionally, it offers cultural and recreational activities for students. This institution is one of the five established by the African Union across the continent, with the others located in Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt, focusing on various areas including space sciences, urban planning, and energy management.
