Summary of Algeria’s Participation in the 2023 World Para-Judo Championships

The Algerian national para-judo team is gearing up for a significant event as four athletes prepare to compete in the World Para-Judo Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, from May 13 to 15, 2023. This competition represents their second international appearance of 2023, following their participation in the World Cup held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in March, where athletes Ishak Ouldkouider and Youcef Radjai secured bronze medals.

The World Championships in Astana is a vital occasion for the athletes, allowing them to face a range of competitors, some familiar and others new. Mounia Kerkar, the national coach, emphasized the importance of this event in assessing the athletes’ preparations and refining their techniques during competitive play. The anticipation is high, particularly after Abdelkader Bouamer, a Paralympic champion, successfully regained his classification (J1) following a previous downgrade at the Tbilisi World Cup. This development is promising as Bouamer looks forward to upcoming competitions.

More than a hundred athletes from around thirty countries are expected to participate, with oversight provided by delegates from the International Judo Federation (IJF). This involvement underlines the collaborative effort between the IJF and the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) in promoting and supervising the sport.

The Algerian athletes are set to begin their matches on Tuesday, and their schedules are as follows:

  • Ishak Ouldkouider (J2/-64kg): Exempt from the first round, he will compete in the quarter-finals against the winner of a match between Ronald Hawthorner (USA) and Anuphan Sanrum (Thailand).

  • Abdelkader Bouamer (J1/64kg): He faces Cuban athlete Miyares Gonzalez in the round of 16, with a potential match against Ukrainian Rudnyk Mykola if he advances.

  • Youcef Radjai (J1/81kg): Also exempt from the first round, he will meet Brazilian Silva Geonimo in the second round.

  • Abderrahmane Chetouane (J1-95kg): He will compete against Indian Kamble Darshan in the first round, and, if victorious, will go on to face Kazakh athlete Adilbekov Abylay.

This World Championship event is a crucial opportunity for the athletes to not only test their skills but also to gain valuable experience on an international platform, further enhancing their qualifications and preparations for future tournaments.
