Algeria’s Capacity for Hosting International Sports Events

In a recent statement made in Oran, Okri-Christophe Nonvignon, the technical delegate of the International Paralympic Committee, highlighted Algeria’s readiness to host both continental and global sporting events, particularly in various athletic disciplines. This declaration coincided with the closing day of the national para-athletics championship at the "Miloud Hadefi" Olympic Complex.

Logistics and Infrastructure

Nonvignon emphasized that Algeria, especially Oran, boasts substantial logistical capabilities and sport infrastructure, making it suitable for high-profile competitions, including the World Championships of para-athletics. The Miloud Hadefi Complex, he noted, stands out as an international-quality venue fully equipped to meet Olympic standards. In addition to this, the Mediterranean Village nearby provides essential amenities for athletes, underscoring the city’s preparedness for hosting major events.

National Championship Context

The national para-athletics championship played a critical role within the calendar of the Algerian Federation for this discipline, aligning with the broader objectives of the International Paralympic Committee. Nonvignon specified that the performances in this championship—whether national, continental, or world records—would influence the para-athletics rankings in anticipation of the upcoming World Championships set to take place in New Delhi, India, from September 26 to October 5, 2025.

Recognizing Achievements

He praised the organizational quality of the national championship, which saw a robust turnout of over 500 athletes. His mission in Oran was to offer technical support and ensure that the competitions adhered to international standards of para-athletics. This championship, organized by the Algerian Handisport Federation in coordination with the Oran Wilaya League, featured 529 participants representing 75 clubs across categories of various disabilities and ages.

Conclusion

Nonvignon’s remarks reflect a growing recognition of Algeria’s capabilities in the sports sector, with a particular focus on adaptive sports. The successful execution of the national championship not only enhances the nation’s profile for hosting future events but also provides opportunities for athletes to showcase their talents on an international stage.
