L’Algérie appelle à la cessation « immédiate » de l’agression sioniste contre Ghaza

Summary of Algeria’s Call for Action on Palestine

On Wednesday in Geneva, Algeria urged for an immediate cessation of the aggression against the Gaza Strip and the illegitimate Zionist presence in the occupied Palestinian territories. Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Rachid Bladehane, articulated the country’s strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s violations of the ceasefire agreement, recalling the significant loss of life and injury inflicted during renewed hostilities, as well as various oppressive and discriminatory policies implemented against the Palestinian people.

During the general debate at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council under agenda item 7, Bladehane highlighted Algeria’s firm stance against the blatant violations of international law by the occupying power, citing practices such as blockades, forced displacement, collective punishment, and ethnic cleansing aimed at erasing the Palestinian cause. Algeria’s position is reinforced by its call for an immediate halt to hostilities in Gaza and disbandment of the Israeli occupying forces, as well as the need for reparations guided by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion and the General Assembly resolutions.

Furthermore, Bladehane condemned the attempts at Judaization in East Jerusalem and demographic changes that facilitate apartheid-like conditions. Algeria reiterated that the international community must fully assume its legal responsibilities, implement the ICJ’s orders, adhere to United Nations resolutions, and activate accountability mechanisms against the Israeli occupation.

Bladehane stressed the importance of maintaining agenda item 7 on the Council’s docket, especially in light of ongoing colonialism and systematic human rights violations against the Palestinian people. He warned that any retreat from this agenda item could undermine the effectiveness and credibility of international law mechanisms.

In tandem with these calls, Algeria urged the global community to provide the necessary political, financial, and material support for the reconstruction of Gaza, aiming to restore its livability following the extensive devastation caused by recent aggressions. Key to this reconstruction, Algeria emphasized, is ensuring that Palestinians remain on their land and that displaced individuals can return home.

Concluding his remarks, Bladehane reaffirmed that a sustainable, fair, and lasting peace is contingent upon ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and all other occupied Arab lands. He stressed the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, while also addressing the refugee issue in line with international legal resolutions.

In summary, Algeria’s call at the UN reflects a strong advocacy for Palestinian rights and a plea for international accountability regarding the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for reconstruction and a resolution based on lawful and just terms.
