Condemnation of Recent Aggression Against Palestine by Algeria at UN

On Thursday, speaking from Geneva, Algeria condemned, in the strongest terms, the renewed aggression by what it termed the "Zionist entity" against the Palestinian people in Gaza. This act was characterized as a violation of the ceasefire agreement established in January, with urgent calls directed toward the international community for immediate action to ensure compliance with the ceasefire by the occupying power.

During the general debate on Agenda Item 4 at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council, Rachid Bladehane, Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Switzerland, made a firm statement regarding the situation. He characterized the renewed attacks as a flagrant violation of international charters and legal norms and underscored the disappointment of the international community, which had hoped for the consolidation of the ceasefire in Gaza. He expressed concern that this aggression undermined efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and hindered reconstruction efforts in the region.

Bladehane remarked that the resurgence of violence would only lead to further devastation, famine, and deprivation of basic survival means for the Palestinian population. He emphasized that such developments are grave and warranted urgent international action to uphold the ceasefire agreement in all its dimensions, reflecting an unwavering commitment to support the Palestinian cause.

In his remarks, Bladehane reaffirmed Algeria’s absolute solidarity with the Palestinian people. He emphasized Algeria’s commitment to standing alongside Palestine until it achieves its national aspirations, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Algeria’s representative also utilized this platform to reiterate the country’s dedication to enhancing and safeguarding human rights, including the right to development. He highlighted the importance of constructive dialogue, cooperation, and respect for national sovereignty when addressing human rights issues. Bladehane underscored the necessity for each country to independently choose its path in promoting human rights, taking into account its unique political, historical, social, religious, and cultural contexts.

Further addressing the Human Rights Council, Bladehane stressed its vital role in fulfilling its mandate of promoting and protecting human rights and translating global cooperation into decisions that represent international consensus towards these goals. He highlighted the importance of states adhering to principles of universality, impartiality, and objectivity to ensure that human rights issues are treated equally across the globe.

Bladehane raised concerns about the selectivity and politicization of human rights discussions, arguing that it is imperative to address human rights abuses in all nations equally. He criticized the tendency to target specific countries while overlooking severe violations occurring elsewhere, which contradicts the accomplishments the Human Rights Council seeks to achieve.

In his conclusion, Bladehane’s calls for urgent international action and steadfast support for the Palestinian cause resonate as Algeria reiterates its commitment to the principles of human rights, solidarity, and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The recent developments, according to Algeria, not only destabilize the region further but also raise critical questions about the effectiveness of international mechanisms for ensuring compliance with human rights norms.
