Summary of Announcement by Agriculture Minister Youcef Cherfa

On Thursday, May 1, 2023, in a session at the Algerian People’s National Assembly, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, announced that the sale of imported sheep for the upcoming Aïd El Adha will commence across all 58 wilayas of Algeria. This operation aims to meet the high demand for sheep during the festivities and will be managed in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture and Interior Commerce.

The government will oversee the sales that will occur daily starting May 1, allowing citizens access to imported sheep in local markets. Cherfa explained that the allocation of sheep to each wilaya will depend on the population density, ensuring that the distribution addresses the demand effectively. Importantly, he clarified that this initiative does not exclude local livestock but, rather, aims to complement it, highlighting a need to support local production amidst the celebratory demand.

In response to questions regarding agricultural land regulation, Cherfa disclosed that the ministry is preparing an executive decree designed to facilitate the resolution of ownership disputes over agricultural land. This new law aims to introduce mechanisms that help those involved in land-sharing conflicts come to an agreement. The decree aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to improve agricultural land management.

Additionally, Cherfa discussed the ministry’s commitment to promoting organic farming within the national agricultural framework. He emphasized the significance of organic agriculture in diversifying Algeria’s economy and boosting exports. The ministry intends to establish specific legal frameworks for organic farming, provide financial and technical support for farmers, aid in obtaining necessary certifications, and enhance marketing and export channels for organic products.

This comprehensive plan reflects a strategic approach by the Algerian government to bolster its agricultural sector while addressing both local needs and broader economic diversification goals, particularly in the realm of organic agriculture.
